Plant Based Products Council Releases 2025 Consumer Trends Research Showing Strong, Growing Public Support for Plant-Based Materials

Nearly Three in Four Consumers Support Policies to Promote Strong American Ag Bioeconomy

Dec. 4, 2025

Washington, D.C. — The Plant Based Products Council (PBPC), which represents companies and stakeholders at the forefront of innovation in the ag bioeconomy, today released its 2025 Consumer Trends Research, revealing overwhelming public support for plant-based products. This is the sixth year PBPC has conducted annual research to track consumer awareness, perceptions, and purchasing behavior related to plant-based products.

Based on a nationwide survey of more than 1,000 consumers, this year’s research underscores the significant manufacturing and supply chain opportunities tied to plant-based products.

“This year’s research makes one thing unmistakably clear: Americans see plant-based products as the future,” said James Glueck, Executive Director of the Plant Based Products Council. “Consumers want materials that support farmers and strengthen U.S. manufacturing. Americans support a strong ag bioeconomy, and they want companies and policymakers to move decisively to unlock domestic manufacturing growth and create innovation jobs and opportunities here in the United States.”

According to PBPC’s 2025 Consumer Trends Research:

  • 71% of consumers are familiar with plant-based products;
  • 85% of consumers view plant-based products favorably;
  • 68% of consumers say they use plant-based products at least monthly;
  • 63% of consumers say they purchase plant-based products at least monthly;
  • 86% of consumers say they are likely to purchase or use plant-based products in the next three months;
  • Nearly three in four consumers support policy incentives and government investment in the American ag bioeconomy.

The findings show plant-based products are firmly established as a mainstream consumer expectation, not a niche trend, and that Americans increasingly view these products as critical to supporting U.S. farmers, expanding domestic manufacturing, and revitalizing rural economies.

The 2025 Consumer Trends Research provides key insights for brands, manufacturers, retailers, and policymakers seeking to meet rising consumer expectations for sustainable materials while supporting U.S. agriculture and advancing domestic manufacturing competitiveness.

This broad consumer acceptance demonstrated in the research reflects a durable shift in consumer expectations toward materials that are renewable, sustainably made, and produced in the United States, creating significant opportunities to support American farmers, bolster new manufacturing investment, and promote domestic job growth.

Consumers also recognize the economic benefits of plant-based materials. Survey respondents overwhelmingly agreed that these products create new markets for American-grown crops, support farmers, and contribute to domestic manufacturing growth. This understanding positions plant-based materials as a rare area of bipartisan economic opportunity, supporting rural communities while driving innovation in U.S. manufacturing.

More broadly, PBPC’s 2025 Consumer Trends Research points to strong public support for building a more robust U.S. bioeconomy. Americans value renewable, U.S.-made alternatives to traditional materials and expect both brands and policymakers to play a leading role in accelerating the shift toward more biobased products.
